Angelo Bellini was born in Mantova, Italy in 1938. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera (Milano) and a talented sketcher, his work became the precursor of a new style based on the fragmentation of time, space and light. Each work results in a kaleidoscope of colours, contrasts and emotions.
His art was soon recognised internationally and is held in many private collections in addition to being featured in many European galleries and museums including Pinacotheque Friuli in Grosseto, Rome, Padova, Cagliari and Palermo Museum of Modern Art.
Angelo Bellini's highly sophisticated sense of culture appears in each of his paintings, while at the same time he keeps alive the sense of discovery and surprise of his childhood. The plural vision of the same subject allows him to escape from the constraints of classical painting and apply bold, transitory snapshots to form the painting as a whole. There is an evident influence of the geometric Cubist approach to composing the picture plane.
We are privileged in being able to exhibit Bellini's paintings here at Vermilion. The Italian art critic Carlo Munari describes his work:
“For Bellini, the art of painting is a conjuring up of the treasures of the memory. On first impression, his paintings appear to be realistic, as they have a clear association with reality, but when one goes beyond this level, one reaches a world of fantasy in which forms become metaphors. Parts of his work symbolise the fate of those subjected to struggle, victory and defeat.”
