Mark’s work draws inspiration from the sea, both the natural wildlife and the weathered effects on coastal structures and the shipping industry. Each piece has its own story to tell. When Mark produces a sculpture it becomes the tale of a journey; objects he discovers on the shoreline often find themselves becoming part of the ceramic creation. He uses a variety of decorative techniques as his ideas flow and develop during the making process. Ships, boats, and wrecks are the main fabric of the work, made from clay that conveys the texture of metal and salvaged wood objects, press moulded, and patched together to produce a variety of forms.
'I try to re-invent objects and give them a new lease of life, rather than go to land fill. I think the importance of doing that is getting more and more relevant in today's environmental uncertainty. My clay element also mimics the aging process, from my ice cream colours to the rust and decay that partners weather-worn timber, metals, plastics, beach finds and ceramics.'Cormorant
