Mick Kirkby-Geddes

Mick Kirkby-Geddes is a metal sculptor who was born in Sheffield and now lives just outside of Holmfirth in the Pennines of West Yorkshire. His sculpture studio is in the old mechanics workshop of a nearby textile mill. The robot sculpture over our Stanley Road gallery entrance is created by Mick - designed in collaboration with our owner James.

Mick finished a three year Fine Art Degree at Leeds in 1988 and then set up working as a sculptor and has not looked back since. It was whilst studying at Leeds that he explored the use of scrap metal to create his sculptures due to the materials budget running out. He then became compelled by the idea of re-using metal that was going to waste to reform it into a piece of art.

Inspired by books, cartoons, animals and 70's kids TV, Mick makes humorous sculptures that can go both inside and outside, often using galvanised steel. He creates commissions for clients including pieces for public spaces. Sometimes Mick will do workshops in schools as his quirky, playful sculptures appeal to kids. Mick considers it a privilege to work with children, having the opportunity to pass on new skills.
