The Northerner

The Northerner is the alter ego of artist Grant Searl and is a very different style both visually and in subject matter; though social commentary and a sense of nostalgia runs through both.

Drawing inspiration from his childhood spent observing the communities, workmen and miners during their daily lives, the industrial north is a subject matter that has been revisited time and time again by artists but in The Northerner's words 'Artist's always approach this subject through rose tinted spectacles or from a child's viewpoint.' The Northerner wanted to develop a style that projected the gritty reality of everyday working people's lives, whilst reflecting the warmth and spirt of friendship, family and community.

'The history and folklore from the cities and towns of the north is an incredibly rich source of inspiration for me, providing a seam of work that I will continue to explore.'

The Northerner’s style of harsh, dark tones, almost appearing like the painting has been created using materials from the mined earth, is juxtaposed with bright, contrasting areas which are also reflective of the industry itself. A unique, distinct style of stylised people and a simplicity in representing the buildings and industrial structures, The Northerner adds strong contrasts, textures and narrative to each piece.
